Wireless networks of small, low-cost, and intelligent sensors are needed for studying Earth’s climate from both the atmosphere and space.  In addition, because of the pandemic of Covid19, such wireless sensor network (WSN) systems are also needed for real-time monitoring of spreading of dangerous viruses or pathogens in closed or open spaces. The Microdrone/WSN team project aims to develop miniaturized robotic vehicles (e.g., microdrones, mini-airplanes, and rovers) capable of carrying various sensors (e.g., biosensors, chemical sensors, and microscopic image sensors) and automatically mapping spatial distribution of specific quantities (e.g., atmospheric parameters, virus concentrations, or concentrations of pollution particles) in targeted spaces. Our current projects include (1) mapleseed-inspired passive drone sensors; (2) foldable mini-size airplanes; (3) drone-carried or rover-carried microscopes.

As part of this faculty research team, students will be exposed to an entire end-to-end design process, including background research, concept generation, simulation, prototyping, and when possible, using clean room micro- and nano-fabrication, and validation by experiment both in the laboratory and the field. New members starting in Winter 2023 will join the current efforts associated with aforementioned projects. In particular, for the Mapleseed sensor project, students will continue to refine the design of the main circuit, seeking to reduce the total weight of the artificial mapleseed system. For the foldable mini-airplane project, students will continue to build the complete plane, set up the flight controller for realizing autonomous navigation, and also carry out field tests. For the vehicle-carried microscope project, students will continue to refine the design of the fluidic system for pre-concentrating the targeted airborne particles and also set up the automatic controlling algorithms for the carrying vehicles, seeking to realize autonomous patrol processes.

In these projects, students are expected to have the opportunity to learn the fundamental knowledge and technical skills related to CAD design, 3D printing, aerodynamic/mechanical simulation, design of printed circuit boards (PCB), microsystem integration, nano/microfabrication (if fund is applicable), robotics, embedded system coding, and machine learning, etc.

TEAM Details

Meeting time and location: For academic credit, our MDP team meets Fridays at 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm ET. Each subteam arranges a convenient time to meet and work together following university guidelines. A two-term commitment will begin January 2023.

Team organization: This team has flexible sub-teams that allow students to deepen their learning: Electronics, Mechanical, Robotics/Design, and some ad hoc functional teams. The teams are flexibly structured to enhance creativity and opportunity for student growth. Each of three subteams has a student team leader that reports to the faculty PIs.

Remote positions available: All roles are available for remote participation.

First-year undergraduates through masters graduate students are welcome to apply, and all will be encouraged to stay on the team for more than the two-semester minimum. Leadership roles are available in the lab, and experienced students will be a natural fit for these positions as their knowledge grows over time.
