Peer Advisor

Roles and Schedules (students may apply for one or more roles)

  • Summer Orientation: Early June – Early August, Monday through Thursday afternoon, 3:30-5:30pm. This schedule is firm. **optional additional 2 hours per week of MDP project work available.
  • Academic Year: 6-10 hours per week (average) required for a minimum of 2 terms.
  • PA Team: Staff recruitment events and key MDP events and workshops, as your schedule allows. Must commit to staffing at least one event/presentation per month.

Required Training

  • Initial orientation and initial training will take place in April or May, as determined by class/summer schedules.
  • College of Engineering Student Staff Training – one half-day training’ typically right before classes begin in September.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Summer Orientation Role
    • Make brief, enthusiastic presentation to incoming students.
      1. Presentations are delivered in an open-house style format for one hour at the end of Day 2 of the Orientation Program.
      2. Schedule determined by the Engineering Advising Center.
    • Plan program and staffing for Fall Term activities.
    • **optional additional 2 hours per week of MDP project work available.
  • Academic Year Role
    • Promote MDP programs and benefits with students, highlighting the MDP Minor.
    • Represent MDP at recruitment events, including FestiFall, NorthFest, Tech Day, Majors Fair, etc.
    • Hold weekly advising hours to review programs and the MDP Minor.
    • General office support – support MDP staff projects, distributing materials, etc.
    • Promote all activities via social media.
  • PA Team Role
    • Staff MDP promotional events, including FestiFall, NorthFest, Tech Day, Majors Fair, LSA Majors/Minors Fair, etc.
    • Staff MDP recruitment events, including info sessions, poster fair set up/take down, and Project Fair (all items occur during the Fall semester).
    • Staff MDP workshops throughout the academic year.
    • Staff and support other MDP events such as Project Fair and Design Expo.
    • Attend MDP PA team meetings 1-2 times per term (schedule tbd based on team members’ class schedule).
    • Distribute MDP materials around campus when needed.
    • **Must commit to staffing at least one event per month**

Required Qualifications

Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; willingness to learn and contribute creatively; strong communication skills, both written and verbal; ability to work independently as well as within a team; strong organizational skills; computer skills (MS Office required); 2.5 cumulative GPA or above.

Desired Qualifications

Current or previous experience on MDP-related design project team; current or intended declaration into MDP Minor
