Automated Aircraft Sensor Evaluation
It is difficult to know when to service aircraft data acquisition probes that are critical to the safe operation of the aircraft. The Collins Aerospace team will develop a mobile friendly web based tool to collect assessment images of aircraft sensors and evaluate the quality of the sensors.
Collins Aerospace manufactures numerous probes to collect data on aircraft in operation. These sensors contribute to the safe operation of the aircraft, and their maintenance is very important, but it can be difficult to identify when they need servicing.
Air Data Systems (ADS) are designed to provide accurate measurements of airspeed, altitude, angle of attack and angle of sideslip compensated for aircraft aerodynamic and installation position effects. For the ADS to perform correctly on the aircraft, both the (1) level of corrosion must be minimal, and (2) installation position must be exact. The installation positional requirements are critical, both in new production and after removal for maintenance.
The students on this project will create a proof of concept using machine vision techniques for automated diagnoses. They will develop mobile friendly website to manage image data and an evaluation engine to identify correct and incorrect ADS placement. They will prove an end to end implementation starting with a camera/tablet and ending with an evaluation.
