Automated Satellite Wire Harness Assembly
Northrop Grumman’s satellite technologies are helping to reshape the boundaries of National Security Space. Students on this team will develop a robotic tool capable of automatically fabricating wire harnesses for one of Northrop Grumman’s spacecraft platforms, decreasing human error in the build.
Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems’ (formerly ATK Orbital) ESPAStar Platform provides a modular, cost-effective, and highly capable infrastructure resource for hosting technology development and operational payloads in space. The ESPAStar Platform is a highly complex system requiring many different complex wire harnesses. These wire harnesses can be long and take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to build. Currently they are all built by hand on an assembly board consisting of a full sized diagram of the assembly. The students on this project will create an automatic robotic harness assembly system minimizing human touch. The goal of this project is to automate the production of building these wire harnesses.
