Harvesting Waste to Heat Power Aircraft Anti-Ice Systems
With advancements being made in the aeronautical industry associated with power density and electrification, there is a growing demand for thermal management of systems. Students on the Eaton project will develop a waste heat repurposing system prototype (validated by simulation and physical testing) that improves overall energy use efficiency.
Current electrical systems generate a lot of waste heat. This energy must at a minimum be extracted from the electrical system (heat load) and dissipated, but has potential to be harvested and utilized. This project will focus on optimizing the amount of heat that can be captured from a system and transferred to another machine to be utilized. Design tradeoffs will occur between the size, mass and cost of a system relative the quantity of heat energy that can be harvested or repurposed.
