Robotic 3D Tetris
Students on the Comau project will reduce the human labor required to package objects by enabling a robot to “play 3D Tetris.” They will deliver a software system that optically perceives the objects and optimizes their placement inside a box.
Comau is a world leader in automation systems and products. Efforts to enter new market space require advanced development and the exploration of new products. One such product will load unknown objects into an enclosed cart or box. The students on the Comau team will develop software to perceive the objects and the space, then plan the placement of the objects into the space. Think of three dimensional Tetris or loading groceries into a shopping cart. The system must recognize unknown objects, recognize the space available, and fit the current object into the space available. Like in Tetris, foresight is a valuable skill.
