Sustainability in Manufacturing: Scrap Rate Analysis & Reduction

This student team will analyze the sources of scrap in the manufacturing process at Detroit Manufacturing Systems.  Reduction of scrap waste is very important in the manufacturing process and is a major source of inefficiency. Students will gain manufacturing floor experience through weekly plant visits, witnessing first-hand the total manufacturing process.

Faculty Mentor: David N. Bakos david
David N. Bakos is a former General Motors Executive who retired with 45 years of management experience in Manufacturing and Assembly. He has led production activities in manufacturing plants in Ohio and Michigan which produced components for Assembly plants including wheels, axles, stampings, springs, bumpers, and welded assemblies. The last 15 years of his career he was responsible for suppling new processes and tooling to assemble new model GM Vehicles at Assembly Plants on a global basis.His activities also included converting work groups to understanding and utilizing the concepts of the Toyota Production System, which the industry now refers Lean Manufacturing Systems. He is a graduate of General Motors Institute with a Bachelor Degree in Industrial Engineering.
